kenya 2013 | on safari

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. – Psalms 19:1-6

This country just continues to amaze me.

After our time working in Kisii, we headed out to the Maasai Mara for a short break.

It was safari time.

Shortly after Vickie Winkler started HEART, she was asked why she brought people to Kenya to show them only the poverty and the dirt and orphans. Why not also show them the beauty this country has to offer?

While I might argue we’ve seen the beauty of this country, especially in its people, I am very glad we were able to have this time wondering in awe at God’s creation. After a week so full of ministry and people, it was great to have a short time to unwind and begin to process what we’ve experienced so far.

We arrived at the safari resort we would be staying in time for a late lunch. I was amazed at this place. We were told our accommodations weren’t as nice, that we’d be staying in tents.

Tent. Right.

And this view from our porch? No complaints here.

While there were many wonderful things about our lodgings, it was the game drives and the animals that were truly spectacular.

We arrived in time for an afternoon game drive, and were soon amazed by the incredible animals, this creation of our Father.

In that first drive we saw:

Thompson’s Gazelle

These animals are simply incredible, and to be so close to so many of them was incredible.

The rest of our time showed us a pride of lions eating a wildebeest kill.

Incredible views.

A pool of hippos (one of which was rather unhappy with how close some of us got!).

Sad that we had not seen some animals, we were given hyenas as we were almost back from our final drive.

And baboons outside the park on our way back to HEART.

It was a great day and a half, experiencing the wonder of creation.

And being excited that we still had a week of ministry ahead of us!
